A Stroll Through Our Garden

Sorry, no stitchy pictures today. After watering the garden, the light was beautiful and I played in the garden with my camera.

These pretty pansies have been flowering since before Christmas! I dead-head them every day and they have just kept flowering.

Deze mooie violen bloeien al sinds voor de kerst! Ik haal iedere dag de dode bloemetjes eruit en ze blijven maar bloeien.

After years of trying to grow plants in a shady place under the trees in our garden that were not happy there, I have now started to create a small woodland area, with foxgloves, anemones, astrantia, aquilegia and ferns.

Nadat ik jaren heb geprobeerd planten te laten groeien in de schaduw onder de bomen die daar niet gelukkig waren, ben ik nu begonnen met het aanleggen van een bostuintje, met vingerhoedskruid in allerlei kleuren en maten, bosanemoontjes, astrantia (Zeeuws knoopje), akeleitjes en varens.

There will hopefully be more to show you from my woodland garden soon, as I received a delivery of woodland plants straight from the nursery today. It included more woodland anemones, pink ones and white ones, two types of dicentra formosa (bleeding hearts that grow in woodlands), and two types of campanula.

Hopelijk kan ik jullie binnenkort nog meer moois laten zien in mijn bostuintje, want vandaag ontving ik een levering bosplantjes rechtstreeks van de kweker. Daar zaten nog meer bosanemoontjes bij, witte en roze, twee soorten dicentra formosa, een soort gebroken hartje dat in het bos groeit en twee soorten campanula.

Quilt Me Club 2013 & Mrs Beasley

Het applique-blok voor deel 4 van Quilt Me Club 2013 van Nataliejo is af. Hieronder zie je een paar details van deze quilt. 

When issue 10 of Vignette magazine was published last week, I instantly fell in love with "Mrs Beasley's Sampler Quilt".

Toen nummer 10 van het tijdschrift Vignette van de week uitkwam, was ik gelijk verliefd op "Mrs Beasley's Sampler Quilt".

Thankfully most of the fabrics which I chose came from my stash, to which I added a few during a visit to my favourite quilt shop Samsara Quilting. As usual, Jacqueline managed to find a few FQ's that complemented my fabrics beautifully. I also bought the backing fabric, a pink Tilda with a small motif, which you see in the background on this photo. I might use a few scraps of it for the front too.

Gelukkig kwamen de meeste stofjes die ik heb gekozen uit mijn voorraad, waaraan ik een paar FQ's heb toegevoegd tijdens een bezoekje aan Samsara Quilting in Lisse. Zoals gewoonlijk vond Jacqueline een paar FQ's die prachtig staan bij de stofjes die ik al had gekozen. Ik heb ook gelijk stof voor de achterkant gekocht, een roze Tilda met een motiefje. Een paar stukjes hiervan zullen misschien ook wel aan de voorkant gebruikt worden. 

Chateau Hexagon Part 1

Part 1 of Chateau Hexagon, the new Button BOM by Lynette Anderson is finished.
It was so much fun to stitch that I cannot wait for part 2 to arrive.
I used a combination of Lynette's fabrics and Japanese fabrics, all from my stash.
The threads are Cosmo Multiwork, my favourite threads for stitcheries, in the recommended colours.

Deel 1 van Chateau Hexagon, het nieuwe blok van de maand van Lynette Anderson is klaar. 
Het was zo leuk om te maken dat ik niet kan wachten tot deel 2 komt. 
Ik gebruikte een combinatie van Lynettes stoffen en Japanse stoffen, allemaal uit voorraad. 
De garens zijn Cosmo Multiwork, mijn lievelingsgarens voor stitcheries, in de aanbevolen kleuren. 

Mother nature has taken her paint brushes out. Our white violets are slowly turning a beautiful shade of pale lilac.

Moeder natuur heeft haar verfkwasten tevoorschijn gehaald. Onze witte bosviooltjes veranderen langzaam van wit in zachtlila.

First of all: part 4 of Quilt Me Club 2013 by Nataliejo.
This is the pieced block which I finished this week. I'm currently working on the applique block. 

Allereerst: deel 4 van Quilt Me Club 2013 van Nataliejo. 
Dit is het patchworkblok dat ik van de week heb afgemaakt. Op dit moment werk ik aan het te appliqueren blok.

Part 1 of Château Hexagon by Lynette Anderson arrived last week.
Hopefully everyone has received their packages now and that I'm not spoiling the surprise. 

Deel 1 van Château Hexagon van Lynette Anderson is vorige week aangekomen. 
Hopelijk heeft iedereen nu zijn pakje binnen en bederf ik de verrassing niet. 

This morning I prepared the first block, the applique pieces and traced the design onto my background fabric.
The picture is a bit contrasty, but in normal mode the background fabric went a really strange yellow.
I'm planning to use Lynette's fabrics where she used them too, combined with fabrics from my collection of Japanese fabrics. 

Vanmorgen heb ik het eerste blokje voorbereid: de te appliqueren onderdeeltjes en ik heb het patroon op de achtergrond overgetrokken. 
Deze foto heeft een erg hoog contrast, omdat anders de achtergrondstof een hele vreemde gele kleur heeft. 
Ik ben van plan Lynettes stofjes te gebruiken daar waar zij het ook doet, gecombineerd met stofjes uit mijn verzameling Japanse stoffen.

On Friday I bought this beautiful French quilting book. It has lots of beautiful designs. I could make something from each page. 

Afgelopen vrijdag kocht ik dit prachtige Franse boek. Er staan heel veel mooie ontwerpen in. Ik kan van iedere bladzijde wel iets maken!

In my comments my stitching friend Glenda from Australia wrote that in her native New Zealand foxgloves grow everywhere and are considered weeds. Apparently fields full of foxgloves are a tourist attraction. New Zealand is now even higher on the list of countries to visit.

Since I paid the earth for my two beautiful foxgloves, I thought I would share two close-ups which I took yesterday and the day before.

In mijn berichtjes schreef mijn handwerkvriendin Glenda uit Australia dat in haar geboorteland Nieuw Zeeland overal vingerhoedskruid groeit en dat het wordt beschouwd als onkruid. Velden vol met vingerhoedskruid zijn een toeristische bezienswaardigheid. 

Aangezien mijn twee mooie planten behoorlijk aan de prijs waren, laat ik nog maar twee macro's zien die ik gisteren en eergisteren heb gemaakt.

In My Garden: the Real Thing This Time

A month later than last year (that's the great thing about keeping a blog, it is like a diary!) I found two beautiful foxglove plants at the local florist's. They are by far my favourite plants/flowers, and they attract insects too. Especially the bees love them, and they are badly in need of a bit of help.

Een maand later dan vorig jaar (dat is het handige van het bijhouden van een blog, het werkt als een dagboek) vond ik twee prachtige vingerhoedskruidplanten bij de plaatselijke bloemist. Het zijn veruit mijn lievelingsplanten, en ze trekken ook nog insecten aan. Vooral de bijen zijn er gek op, en zij kunnen wel wat hulp gebruiken. 

A close-up of a foxglove flower (digitalis). They really are the most amazing flowers, and you can see why they are called foxgloves. I can just imagine a little fox's paw fitting in one of these cups.
In Dutch, they have an even more apt name, they are called "thimble herb. 

Een macro van een vingerhoedskruidbloem (digitalis). Het zijn echt prachtige bloemen, en je kunt goed zien waarom ze in het Nederlands vingerhoedskruid heten. 
In het Engels heten ze foxglove; vossenhandschoen. Ik zie zo dat pootje van die vos voor me die in die kelk past.

 

Our pansies are still going strong. This picture (and the one below) was taken ten minutes ago. Helped by the rather cool weather, they still look beautiful. I dead-head them every day, to keep them going for as long as possible.

Onze viooltjes doen het nog goed. Deze foto (en die hieronder) is tien minuten geleden genomen. Geholpen door het nogal frisse weer, zien ze er nog steeds prachtig uit. Ik haal iedere dag de uitgebloeide bloemetjes eruit, om ze zo lang mogelijk in leven te houden.

I hope you enjoyed the stroll through our garden, and that you don't mind that I don't have any stitchy photos to show you this time. I *am* working hard on several of my projects. All my projects are hand-stitched and hand-pieced, which means they take longer to complete.

Ik hoop dat je dit wandelingetje door onze tuin leuk vond, en dat je het niet al te erg vond dat ik deze keer geen handwerkfoto's laat zien. Ik werk *echt* hard aan een aantal projecten, waarover binnenkort meer. Al mijn projecten worden met de hand gemaakt en dat betekent dat ik er langer over doe om ze af te krijgen.

Ik ben snel weer terug met handwerknieuws.

WOW: WIPs On Wednesdays

Part 1 of Saltbox Farm was finished on Saturday. So much fun to work on, with a combination of piecing, applique and stitchery.  I ended up changing quite a few of the fabrics, as I happened to have some of the original fabrics which the designer chose in my stash.

Deel 1 van Saltbox Farm was zaterdag af. Hij is erg leuk om aan te werken, met een combinatie van patchwork, appliqueren en stitchery. Uiteindelijk heb ik best veel stofjes vervangen, omdat ik toevallig een aantal van de door de ontwerpster gekozen stoffen in mijn voorraad had. 

Some details of part 1. The flower in the circle is a flannel flower, according to the designer. Having never heard of flannel flowers, I had a Google and found this pretty flower:

Een paar details van deel 1. De bloem in de cirkel is een 'flannel flower', volgens de ontwerpster. Ik had er nog nooit van gehoord, heb even geGoogeld, en vond dit mooie bloemetje. 

Even one of the Japanese taupe fabrics made an appearance. 

Zelfs een van de Japanse taupe stoffen maakte zijn opwachting.

Once Saltbox Farm part 1 was completed, I started pulling fabrics for Phebe by Di Ford.
Kruimel just loves it when lots of fabrics get auditioned and he can snooze under the daylight lamp.

Toen deel 1 van Saltbox Farm klaar was, ben ik stoffen gaan uitzoeken voor Phebe door Di Ford. Kruimel vindt het heerlijk als ik stoffen aan het uitzoeken ben en hij kan soezen onder de daglichtlamp.

He helped me choose fabrics for the first of 80 (!!) Ohio Star blocks for Phebe's first border. These blocks are only 4,5 inch, excluding seam allowance.

Hij heeft me geholpen de stoffen te kiezen voor de eerste van 80 (!!) Ohio Star blokjes voor de eerste rand van Phebe. De blokjes zijn maar 4.5 inch, de zoom niet meegerekend.

He doesn't appear to approve of these colours ;o)

Hij vindt deze kleuren blijkbaar niet zo mooi ;o) 

This pretty aquilegia is called Mrs Scott Elliot. I sowed the seeds last year, when the plant just grew a few leaves. Then this Spring it grew a lot taller and has lots of flower buds. Yay! So much fun to see a plant grow from seed and actually flower.

Deze mooie akelei heet "Mrs Scott Elliot". Ik heb hem vorig jaar gezaaid, maar toen groeiden er alleen maar een paar blaadjes. Dit voorjaar werd de plant veel groter en hij heeft veel bloemknopjes. Joepie! Het is zo leuk om een plant te zien groeien uit zaadjes en hem te zien bloeien.

Our Garden After the Rain

The weather still doesn't feel anything like Spring or even early Summer, but nature is so beautiful after a whole day of rain.

Het weer lijkt nog steeds niet op voorjaar of zelfs vroege zomer, maar de natuur is zo mooi na een hele dag regen.
