A wonderful start of the New Year

2019 started very well for me, as I boarded a plane headed for Inverness on the very first day of the new year. On my way to see my friends, whom I hadn't seen for way too long after returning with an injury in April 2017.

It was very eerie to be travelling along a normally busy motorway which was completely empty, except for us. 9 am on New Year's morning.
An empty motorway looks really bizarre.
Echt bizar zo'n lege snelweg.

For breakfast at the airport I sampled the apple crumble, to get in the mood...

Soon it was time to go to the gate...

.... and once airborne, I enjoy taking photographs of the cloudscapes. It was so beautiful to see those mountains between the clouds.

After a short flight of 1 hour and 15 minutes (we must have had a tail wind), we landed at Inverness Airport, in the Highlands...

.... where I was soon sampling the carrot cake at the airport cafe. It was so very lovely to see my friend again.

Over coffees, teas, and cakes, I told my friend about an interesting old church building and cemetery I had seen from the air. It is very difficult to estimate distance from a plane, because you pass over things so quickly, but I had remembered that this cemetery was situated near the Castle Stuart golf links, which is not far from the airport.

My friend was very willing to go on a little expedition (as we like to call it) and we managed to find the church without too much driving around.

As I had thought, it is a very interesting place for a future photo session. Both the graves and the building are very interesting.

The graves have very unusual ornaments that I hadn't seen before.

The next morning I woke to this view from 'my' bedroom window. So familiar yet always so special.

The view over the water is to the isle of Scalpay. It never bores me.
Het verveelt me nooit.

Whilst I was preparing for going away, I didn't have time to prepare a project to work on, so I packed a big cake of yarn and a few crochet hooks in my suitcase.
I didn't bring my painting materials this time, because it was a shortish visit and I will be going back at the end of March.

I never got around to doing any crochet, as my friend had bought a motorhome, which was ideal for us.

Due to several chronic illnesses I suffer from, it is difficult for me to do long photo sessions.
The motor home is ideal for being out and about in, with my friend and 1-year old labrador Marcus and to have a cuppa and/or a rest in between shorter sessions. If one of us doesn't feel like doing anything, we can just have a rest, a read, a cuppa. There is even a toilet on board. Perfect.
Perfect gewoon.

You may have spotted the blue fabric. My friend told me she would like the cushions to be covered with this fabric. I offered to do it for her, to make cushion covers, if she had a sewing machine.

Upon seeing hers (just kidding, but it *does* sew, apparently)....

.... I asked her could we borrow a sewing machine from somewhere on the island ....

... we could. It was the first time I had ever used a Bernina and I was pleasantly surprised.

.... a lot of measuring and cutting and sewing later, we had all the important cushions covered, which left me with a bit of a challenge for the back rest which was fixed in the motor home and wouldn't come out

This was the (almost) end result for that little area

It felt good to spend part of the time together doing something useful, to pay back my friends for their hospitality.

Soon it was time to go back home.... but the farewell was made easier by the fact that I will be seeing my friends again at the end of March, for a longer stay this time.

More cloudscapes on the way back. Two modes of transport meeting each other above the North Sea.

Land Ahoy. The Dutch coast, probably Noordwijk.
Land in zicht. De Nederlandse kust, vermoedelijk bij Noordwijk.

Till next time with some progress on my crochet project (still the second Mandala Madness for my SIL), and a wintry episode in our part of the world. And possibly the start of a new project ;)

I will be linking to Esther's WOW, even though there is not really a WOW in this blog post.

Back from Scotland

Back from Scotland, after two lovely weeks in the Outer and Inner Hebrides. Time to show you what I was working on before I left.

This is one of the blocks part two of Quilt Me Club 2013. Sorry for the creases, as usual ;-)

A few weeks back I started Beaded Dragonfly Tile by Châtelaine, and then ran out of beads to complete the other three dragonflies. They have arrived since then, so I can continue this beautiful small project.

This is 'our' holiday cottage on the Isle of Barra in the Outer Hebrides. A lovely little house called Number Nine Ardmhor.

Our view from the kitchen window.

Ons uitzicht vanuit de keuken.

Back soon with the watercolours I painted during my stay in Scotland, and more blocks for part 2 of Quilt Me Club 2013.

The Isle of Skye

As you can see from the picture above, and the title of this post, I once more travelled to the Isle of Skye, my favourite part of Scotland. The main reason was a concert by my favourite Scottish fiddler, Duncan Chisholm. And what an amazing concert it was, in a very small venue in Portree. It was as if I had given Duncan a list of my favourite tunes: he played them all :o)

The picture above was taken in the area where my friend and I walked her dog every day. What an amazing place to walk one's dog!

The small fishing boats are situated behind the local shops. Somehow the back of the shops in our town are not quite so attractive!

And if you wondered what is behind that harbour wall:

The island of Scalpay across from where my friends live looked a bit spooky with this strangely shaped cloud above it.

One half of the beautiful rainbow across the water.

And here is the other half.

En hier is de andere helft.

I came back exactly one week ago and boy am I feeling nostalgic...

Back soon with pictures of the projects I am currently working on.

An Epic Journey

Some of you who probably already guessed that I sneaked away to my favourite island in Scotland, when they saw the water colour paintings I showed last month.

This is a beautiful sunset across from my friends' house.

Another sunset, which happened on my first evening on Skye. They don't get much better!

Walking the dog is a daily ritual on Skye. Not a bad view when walking a dog with friends.

Suddenly I found myself on my way to the Lake District. My Dad had been taken ill whilst on holiday and needed to be driven home. This is the view of Rannoch Moor from the train from Fort William to Glasgow.

At the end of a long day of travelling (involving a coach, two trains and two taxis) from Skye to the Lake District, this was the view from my Mum and Dad's holiday destination: a sheep farm near Kendal in the Lake District.

I didn't get to enjoy it for very long, because the next morning we were on our way to Newcastle, to catch the evening ferry to IJmuiden in Holland. Mum and Dad's car was rather full of luggage once their luggage and mine was loaded up.

The journey went smoothly and around 5 pm we were on our way to Holland.

A last view of Newcastle from the ferry. Those little boats look like toy boats from the huge ferry.

Our poor little Minty is still ill. Blood tests which were taken last week revealed that she has pancreatitis. She is going for an ultrasound this afternoon, to make sure there is nothing nasty happening in her tummy.
She is feeling very poorly at the moment and I am injecting her with pain killers and anti-nausea medication.

Back soon with pictures of Fernhill parts 1 to 4. Only a few more blackberries to fill with French knots before I can show you the four parts completed.

This blog entry will be linked to Esther's WOW (WIPs on Wednesdays). Grab a cuppa and have a look at what stitchers from all over the world are doing.
