Love Entwined, still in progress

Naast "Garden of Forgetfulness", werk ik ook nog steeds aan mijn "Love Entwined" van Esther Aliu.
Omdat ik er al zo lang aan werk, sinds het ontwerp voor het eerst werd uitgebracht, blijf ik onderdelen veranderen en aanpassen aan mijn huidige smaak en handwerk-niveau. 

Beside "Garden of Forgetfulness", I'm also still working on my Love Entwined. 
Having worked so long on it, I started it when it was first published by Esther, I keep changing bits and pieces, adapting it to my current taste and level of skill. 

Van de zomer heb ik eraan gewerkt op ons terras. Ik verving de 'Dutch clogs' door hartjes, die ik mooier vond en die goed passen bij een project met 'Love' als deel van de naam. 

This summer I worked on it on our terrace. I replaced the 'Dutch clogs' with hearts, which I liked more and which is fitting for a project which has Love in its name. 



Esther zelf uitte van de week haar verbazing en frustratie dat haar eigen Love Entwineds (ze maakt er twee) nog steeds niet af zijn, terwijl er steeds vaker prachtige Love Entwined quilts verschijnen. Ik begrijp die frustratie volledig.

Esther herself expressed her surprise and frustation that her own Love Entwined quilts (yes she is making two of them) still aren't finished, whilst there are finished Love Entwined quilts appearing more often. I understand that frustration, and feel the same.

Een van de dingen die ik veranderde is de gele randen. Die werden oker. Daar ging ik weer aan twijfelen toen ik hem tevoorschijn haalde maar ik moet een keer stoppen met veranderen anders komt hij nooit af.

One of the things I changed is the yellow borders. They became ochre/gold. I started doubting that choice when I picked it up again, but I have to stop changing things or it will never be finished.

Ik werk aan het middenstuk, de boeketten in de vazen, in broderie perse, maar heb ook al een groot deel van de randen bijna klaar. 

I'm working on the centre, the bouquets in broderie perse, but I also have a large part of the borders nearly finished.

Op de eerste serie randen doe ik de kleine boeketjes ook in broderie perse. Hele kleine bloemetjes.

On the first series of borders, I'm doing the small bouquets in broderie perse too. They are very small flowers.


Er zit veel herhaling in dit project, waardoor ik af en toe iets anders moet gaan doen.

There is a lot of repetition in this project, which is the reason why I have to do something else now and then. 

Dat is in ieder geval mijn excuus dat ik af en toe afgeleid ben ;)

That is my excuse for being distracted now and then ;)

From Yellow to Ochre - Van geel naar oker

Promises need to be kept, so I'm starting a new blog post right now.
Belofte maakt schuld, dus ik begin vol goede moed aan een nieuw blogje. 

When I decided that I didn't like the yellow in my Love Entwined after all, this meant I had to make a new compass too. Not that that stopped me.
Toen ik besloot dat ik het geel in mijn Love Entwined bij nader inzien niet mooi vond, betekende dit ook datik een nieuw kompas moest maken. Ik liet me hier niet door weerhouden. 

First I unpicked the broderie perse rose and laid it on top of my new compass, to see whether I liked that enough to swap them out. I loved what I saw, and took the compass out.

Ik heb eerst de broderie perse roos losgehaald en op het nieuwe kompas gelegd, om te zien of ik het mooi genoeg vond om ze om te ruilen. Ik werd heel blij van wat ik zag en haalde het oude kompas eruit.

Then I inserted the new compass and thread-basted it in place.

Ik stopt het nieuwe kompas erin en reeg het op zijn plaats.

So far so good. It still needs reverse appliqueing in place. And the broderie perse rose appliqued.
Now I am happy and can continue my LE journey.
Tot zover gaat het goed. Het moet nog omgekeerd geapliqueerd worden. En de broderie perse roos moet er weer worden opgezet. Nu ben ik tevreden en kan ik verder met mijn LE-avontuur.

This means unpicking all the yellow bits in the centre, and inserting new ochre bits. On the borders, this is mostly done already.

Dit betekent alle gele onderdeeltjes in het middenstuk loshalen, en nieuwe okerkleurige stukjes erop zetten. Op de randen heb ik dat al grotendeels gedaan. 

Some of you may remember my furry helper. Well, he is still helping and I couldn't do this without him, of course.

Sommigen van jullie herinneren zich vast mijn hulpje. Nou, hij helpt nog steeds en ik zou dit natuurlijk niet kunnen doen zonder hem. 

Friday, on the way home from visiting my Mum and Dad, who live just a village away now, I took this picture of an amazing sunset on the way back. This is around the corner from where we live.

Vrijdag op de terugweg van Mam en Pap, die nu maar één dorpje verderop wonen, nam ik deze foto van een prachtige zonsondergang. Dit is om de hoek van waar wij wonen. 

And what you cannot see in this picture, was visible on Sunday on the way back, our area still covered in snow. Same farm, same spot, just a bit earlier in the day.

En wat je niet kunt zien in de eerste foto, was zondag zichtbaar op de terugweg. Ons gebied is nog steeds bedekt onder een flinke laag sneeuw. Het is dezelfde boerderij, iets eerder op de dag.

Over a Year Since my Last Post

So it has been over a year since I last wrote anything here. I didn't intend to give up on it, but Facebook has somehow taken over and it is much faster to just post a finished block there for my stitching friends to see.

Het is ondertussen ruim een jaar geleden dat ik hier iets heb geschreven. Het was niet de bedoeling het op te geven, maar Facebook heeft het een beetje overgenomen. Het is veel sneller om daar even een blok dat ik af heb aan mijn handwerkvriendinnen te laten zien. 

I'm still more or less working on the same projects. Mainly Love Entwined by Esther Aliu, a bit of Dear Jane and a bit of Antique Wedding Sampler by Di Ford.

Ik werk nog steeds aan dezelfde projecten. Vooral Love Entwined van Esther aliu, af en toe een Dear Jane-blokje en ook af en toe een blok voor mijn Antique Wedding Sampler van Di Ford. 

I went off the yellow fabric which I chose for the narrow borders, and went for a gold one by Hoffman instead. This meant I had to redo my compass. It had yellow, and also other fabrics which I didn't use in the rest of the quilt.

De gele stof die ik had gekozen voor de smalle randen om mijn LE begonnen me tegen te staan en ik heb hem vervangen door een oker-kleurige stof van Hoffman. Dit betekende dat ik mijn kompas opnieuw moest maken. Er zat geel in en ook andere stoffen die ik verder niet gebruikt heb in de quilt. 

 This is the new 'ochre' fabric which I prefer to the old one. This means all the yellow needs to come out....

Dit is de nieuwe oker rand die ik veel mooier vind dan de oude. Dit betekent dat al het geel weg moet...

The new compass was finished on January 17th, but still needs to be inserted in the compass ring

 Het nieuwe kompas was af op 17 januari, maar het moet nog in de kompasring gezet worden.

The first two rows of borders are in different stages of completion, with the repetition mostly done.
In the second row of borders, each border has 86 of those leaves. 

De eerste twee series randen bevinden zich in verschillende stadia van volooiing. De herhalingen zijn grotendeels klaar. In de tweede serie randen zitten per rand 86 blaadjes. 

Now that I'm happy with my colours for LE, I can continue.

Nu ik tevreden ben over de kleuren van LE, kan ik weer verder.

Purple berries? Burgundy berries? Which broderie perse flower? Still choosing as I go along.

Paarse besjes? Bordeauxrode besjes? Welke broderie perse bloem? Ik ben ondertussen nog steeds an het kiezen. 


I ordered some of the new 80 wt Aurifil applique thread and I love it. For now I have three colours, but more will be added soon. It is very fine, but very easy to use, and it doesn't tangle or knot.

Ik heb een paar klosjes van het nieuwe Aurifil 80 garen besteld en ik vind het erg fijn. Ik heb nu drie kleuren maar er komen er snel een paar bij. Het is heel dun, maar heel makkelijk in gebruik. Het gaat niet in de knoop. 

Highlight of the quilting year for me was Jane's visit. It was the first time we met and we spent such a lovely day in our garden, together with her lovely husband.

Hoogtepunt van het quiltjaar was voor mij het bezoek van mijn vriendin Jane uit Engeland. Het was de eerste keer dat elkaar ontmoetten en we hebben een heerlijke dag gehad in onze tuin, samen met haar lieve man.

Our new home is slowly receiving its badly needed TLC. We have now finished the sitting room and the settees arrived just before Christmas. We love how cozy it now is.

Ons nieuwe oude huis krijgt langzaam maar zeker zijn renovaties. We hebben nu de woonkamer af en de banken zijn vlak na de kerst gekomen. We vinden het heel gezellig geworden. 

We still need some more things on the walls and curtains, but we will get there at some point.

Er moet nog iets meer aan de muur en we hebben ook nog geen gordijnen, maar dat komt nog wel. 

Our main feature at the moment are these lovely panels which we found whilst out shopping for Christmas presents.

De blikvanger in de woonkamer is op dit moment deze twee panelen die we vonden terwijl we kerstcadeautjes kochten. 

This is the area where our home is situated. To the right of that highest tree in the middle, are two of our walnut trees.

Dit is het 'buurtje' waar we wonen. Rechts van die hoogste boom in hetmidden zie je twee van onze walnootbomen. 

Our home last month, when it was very foggy early one morning.

Ons huis vorige maand, toen het op een ochtend erg misting was. 

Unfortunately we lost our sweet tomcat Elvis two weeks ago. He was 11.5 years old when he passed away in my arms.

We hebben helaas twee weken geleden onze lieve kater Elvis verloren. Hij was 11,5 jaar oud toen hij in mijn armen stierf.

Dit is mijn lievelingsfoto van hem, als klein jochie van 12 weken. 

We miss him so much.

We missen hem vreselijk.

Love Entwined: Second Vase in Progress

Would you believe I'm still working happily on Love Entwined. It has been four months now and I've hardly done anything else stitching wise. All other projects are on hold.

The second vase is coming along nicely. It is easier than the first vase, because I know what I'm doing now, the fabrics have been chosen and it is just a matter of doing flower arranging with fabrics. I'm using Esther's pattern as a basis for the composition and for most of the leaves, and filling it in with broderie perse flowers. 

Geloof het of niet, maar ik werk nog steeds met plezier aan Love Entwined. Het duurt nu al vier maanden en ik heb amper iets anders gedaan op handwerkgebied. Alle andere projecten liggen stil.

De tweede vaas schiet al goed op. Het is makkelijker dan met de eerste vaas, omdat ik weet hoe het werkt, de stoffen zijn gekozen, en het is een kwestie van bloemschikken met stoffen. Ik gebruik het patroon van Esther als basis, en ook het merendeel van de blaadjes, en vul het in met broderie perse bloemen.

I have fallen in love with the broderie perse technique. It is so much fun to do.

Ik ben verliefd geworden op de broderie perse-techniek. Het is zo leuk om te doen.

These little primroses are so sweet. They remind me of spring on the Outer Hebrides. Primroses grow everywhere at that time of year.

Deze primulaatjes zijn zo lief. Ze herinneren me aan het voorjaar in de Buiten Hebriden. Dan groeien er overal gele primula's in het wild. 


After several rainy days with high winds, the weather has calmed down. I woke up to a bit of sunshine, which was shining beautifully on the hydrangeas. They are beginning to show their autumn colours.

Na een paar regenachtige dagen met harde wind is het weer gekalmeerd. Toen ik wakker werd scheen er een waterig zonnetje, dat prachtig licht wierp op de hortensia's. Ze beginnen te verkleuren nu het herfst is.

Love Entwined: Vase One Completed

It took some doing, but at last the first vase and bouquet for Love Entwined is finished.
Please ignore the traced lines which still need to fade. 

Het was even een klus, maar de eerste vaas met boeket voor Love Entwined is klaar. 
Let maar even niet op de lijnen van de verdwijnpen die nog moeten verdwijnen. 

Some detail images of the flowers, berries and stems. The broderie perse technique is so much fun to do. I had never done it before. The rose in the centre of my Love Entwined kompas was the first broderie perse flower which I appliqued.

Wat detailfoto's van de bloemen, besjes en stengels. De broderie perse-techniek is zo leuk om te doen. Ik had het nog nooit gedaan; de roos in het midden van het kompas was de eerste broderie perse bloem die ik heb geappliqueerd.

Kruimel was being his helpful self when Marcel was installing some new sound equipment. The photo is not entirely in focus, but that's because I couldn't stop laughing. 

Kruimel was weer erg behulpzaam toen Marcel een nieuw geluidsapparaat installeerde. De foto is niet helemaal scherp, maar dat komt omdat ik mijn lachen niet kon houden.

And no blog post is complete without a picture of our little furry girl Luna. She is less than half Kruimel's size and just too cute.

Geen blogje is compleet zonder een foto van ons kleine poezenmeisje Luna. Ze is minder dan de helft van de grootte van Kruimel en té schattig.

Back soon with more Love Entwined news. This project has entirely held my focus over the past weeks, even though I did struggle with it at times. One of Esther Aliu's Yahoo group members called it "Love Unpicked" and I must say mine falls in that category too.

Ik meld me snel weer met meer Love Entwined nieuws. Dit project heeft me de afgelopen weken nie los gelaten, al heb ik er wel een aantal keren mee geworsteld. Een van Esther Aliu's Yahoo Group leden heeft dit project omgedoopt in "Love Unpicked" en de mijne valt ook in die categorie.

WOW: Love Entwined the Broderie Perse Vase

Believe it or not, Love Entwined is still my focus project. In fact it is the only thing I'm working on at the moment. Very unlike me, but Love Entwined has a special magic that is hard to resist.

This is where I was at when I dithered and dithered and decided to use the broderie perse technique for my corner vases, parts 4, 5, 6 and 7 of Love Entwined. 

Geloof het of niet maar Love Entwined is nog steeds het project waar ik aan werk. Sterker nog, het is het enige project waar ik op dit moment aan werk. Heel ongebruikelijk voor mij, maar Love Entwined heeft een betovering die ik niet kan weerstaan. 

Dit is hoe ver ik was gekomen voor ik na veel denkwerk en twijfels besloot om de vazen en boeketten voor de delen 4, 5, 6 en 7 met de broderie perse techniek te gaan doen.

I took a photograph of the colours in the centre, with the yellow variegated fabric I'm planning to use for the narrow borders around the centre. 

Ik nam een foto van de kleuren in het middenstuk en de gele verloopstof die ik van plan ben te gebruken voor de smalle gele randen om het middenstuk.

I changed the centre piece of my compass and did a broderie perse rose. My first ever broderie perse work. Even though it is very fiddly and takes forever (it took me a whole evening to get this rose stitched down) I do love it.

After a visit to my favourite quilt shop Samsara Quilting in Lisse, I spent an evening cutting out flowers from the fabrics I bought there, and some from my stash.This is the first layout I came up with:

Ik veranderde het middenstuk van het kompas en zette er in plaats daarvan een broderie perse roos op. Mijn eerste broderie perse werk ooit. Het is erg priegelig en duurt erg lang (het kostte me een hele avond om deze roos geappliqueerd te krijgen) maar ik vind het erg leuk om te doen. 

Na een bezoek aan mijn lievelingsquiltwinkel Samsara Quilting in Lisse heb ik een avond bloemen uitgeknipt uit de gekochte stoffen en een aantal uit mijn voorraad. Dit is de eerste layout die ik die avond heb gemaakt:

Since then I have spent lots of hours needleturning the flowers and leaves.

Sinds vorige week donderdag heb ik heel veel uurtjes bloemetjes en blaadjes geappliqueerd.

The stems still need stitching and the little hearts chosen and made. 

De stengels moeten nog worden geborduurd en de kleine hartjes gekozen en gemaakt.

I'm using the layout according to Esther's design, and filling it in with broderie perse flowers and the leaves mostly as charted. 

Ik gebruik de layout van het ontwerp van Esther, en vul dat met broderie perse bloemen, en de blaadjes veelal volgens het patroon.

This is what I spent yesterday evening on, a pretty pink tulip. I started using a new type of needle last night, which does make a diffence even though they are a lot longer than the needles I'm used to.

Dit is wat ik gisteravond heb gedaan, een mooie roze tulp. Sinds gisteravond gebruik ik andere naalden en hoewel ze veel langer zijn dan ik gewend was, werkt het wel lekker.

Love Entwined Part 3 in Progress

On Thursday, part 3 of Love Entwined was published. We are adding two polka dot flowers and two circles of hearts this month. I started with the Polka Dot flowers:

Op donderdag is deel 3 van Love Entwined uitgekomen. Deze maand maken we twee gestippelde bloemen en twee cirkels met harten. Ik ben begonnen met de gestippelde bloemen: 

The centre of these leaves is done in reverse applique, revealing the background fabric.

Het midden van deze bladeren wordt omgekeerd geappliqueerd, waardoor de achtergrondstof zichtbaar wordt. 

Underneath the pink 'oak leaves' I added some yellow fabric which will be visible in the centre once the leaves have been reverse appliqued.

Onder de roze 'eikenbladeren' heb ik gele stof gedaan, die zichtbaar zal worden in het midden zodra de bladeren geappliqueerd zijn. 

Not too happy with my first attempt at reverse applique, but practise makes perfect, I guess, so by the time I have done 8 of these 'oak leaves' it should look alright.

Ik ben niet zo tevreden over mijn eerste poging om omgekeerd te appliqueren, maar oefening baart kunst zullen we maar zeggen. Tegen de tijd dat ik acht 'eikenbladeren' heb gemaakt, zullen ze wel mooier worden. 

Four 'oak leaves' and two polka dot leaves finished, and two basted in place.
Once these are done, the first circle of hearts will be next.
I also need to add no fewer than 48 8 mm circles, the same size as the tiny circles on the compass ring. 

Vier 'eikenbladeren' en twee gestippelde bladeren zijn klaar, en twee zijn geregen. 
Als deze klaar zijn, ga ik verder met de eerste cirkel met hartjes. 
Op de bladeren komen 48 rondjes van 8 mm, dezelfde maat als de rondjes op de kompasring.
