Quilt Exibition Alkmaar 2013

 

 The annual quilt exhibition of the Dutch Quilt Guild is currently being held in the big church in Alkmaar. 

De jaarlijkse tentoonstelling van het Quiltersgilde wordt momenteel gehouden in de Grote Kerk in Alkmaar.

The atmosphere and light is beautiful in this church.

De sfeer en het licht zijn prachtig in deze kerk. 


I was completely blown away by this beautiful piece of art by Janneke de Vries: Hot Africa.
Having lived in Africa as a child, this really made me feel nostalgic.

Ik was volledig overweldigd door dit prachtige kunstwerk door Janneke de Vries: Hot Africa. 
De heimwee naar Afrika, waar ik als kind heb gewoond, kwam in alle hevigheid terug.

This is an adaptation of Esther Aliu's design Red Delicious, which the maker called Teatime in the Garden.
It was very sad to see that Esther's name was not mentioned anywhere.
Esther is also the designer of Love Entwined, the beautiful design which is being made all over the world (also by me). 

Dit is een ontwerp van Esther Aliu, Red Delicious, door de maakster "Teatime in the Garden" genaamd.
Het was triest om te zien dat Esthers naam nergens werd genoemd.
Esther is ook de ontwerpster van Love Entwined, de quilt die overal over de wereld wordt gemaakt (ook door mij).

I was very good and only bought two pieces of fabric for my Love Entwined project.
The one in the background is variegated.

Ik was heel braaf en heb maar twee stukken stof gekocht voor mijn Love Entwined project. 
De stof in de achtergrond verloopt van kleur.

Love Entwined Part 3 in Progress

On Thursday, part 3 of Love Entwined was published. We are adding two polka dot flowers and two circles of hearts this month. I started with the Polka Dot flowers:

Op donderdag is deel 3 van Love Entwined uitgekomen. Deze maand maken we twee gestippelde bloemen en twee cirkels met harten. Ik ben begonnen met de gestippelde bloemen: 

The centre of these leaves is done in reverse applique, revealing the background fabric.

Het midden van deze bladeren wordt omgekeerd geappliqueerd, waardoor de achtergrondstof zichtbaar wordt. 

Underneath the pink 'oak leaves' I added some yellow fabric which will be visible in the centre once the leaves have been reverse appliqued.

Onder de roze 'eikenbladeren' heb ik gele stof gedaan, die zichtbaar zal worden in het midden zodra de bladeren geappliqueerd zijn. 

Not too happy with my first attempt at reverse applique, but practise makes perfect, I guess, so by the time I have done 8 of these 'oak leaves' it should look alright.

Ik ben niet zo tevreden over mijn eerste poging om omgekeerd te appliqueren, maar oefening baart kunst zullen we maar zeggen. Tegen de tijd dat ik acht 'eikenbladeren' heb gemaakt, zullen ze wel mooier worden. 

Four 'oak leaves' and two polka dot leaves finished, and two basted in place.
Once these are done, the first circle of hearts will be next.
I also need to add no fewer than 48 8 mm circles, the same size as the tiny circles on the compass ring. 

Vier 'eikenbladeren' en twee gestippelde bladeren zijn klaar, en twee zijn geregen. 
Als deze klaar zijn, ga ik verder met de eerste cirkel met hartjes. 
Op de bladeren komen 48 rondjes van 8 mm, dezelfde maat als de rondjes op de kompasring.

Love Entwined Progress

After a lot of prepping of leaves, circles and triangles...

Na veel voorbereiding van blaadjes, rondjes en driehoekjes....

...I finally managed to complete the centre piece for Love Entwined. 

... is het middenstuk van Love Entwined eindelijk af. 

I added some tiny yellow French knots to my star flowers, but wasn't sure whether that works or not, so I took a photo of a flower with and a flower without knots. That always helps me to see more clearly how it looks. 

Ik heb kleine Franse knoopjes geborduurd in de sterbloemen, maar wist niet zeker of het wat was of niet. Ik nam een foto van een bloem met en zonder knoopjes. Dat helpt me altijd om te zien of iets werkt of niet.

The tiny flowers in between the triangles are 4 cm from the bud to the bottom of the stem.

De bloemetjes tussen de driehoeken zijn 4 cm van bloemknop tot uiteinde van het steeltje.

I'm now working on the zigzag border which will be attached around the outsides of this block. There are many more zigzag borders to come for the next parts, and part 3 will be released on the 15th of August, so I had better get going!

Nu werk ik aan de zigzagrand die rondom dit blok vastgezet zal worden. Er komen nog meer van die zigzagranden voor de volgende delen, en deel 3 komt op 15 augustus, dus ik ga maar snel aan het werk! 

I'm also doing a Miniature Landscape art quilting course online, but that will keep for next time.

Ik ben ook bezit met een art quilting cursus Miniature Landcapes op het internet, maar daarover later meer. 

WOW: Love Entined progress & Mrs Beasley's Sampler Quilt & Lovely Presents

Love Entwined part 2 was published on Sunday. Kruimel and I set to work immediately to get the pattern taped. The centre block is 31.5 inches without seam allowance.
Kruimel looks like he is thinking "Are you sure we are doing this one, Mummy? It is HUGE!"

Het tweede deel van Love Entwined is zondag uigekomen. Kruimel en ik zijn gelijk aan het werk gegaan om het patroon aan elkaar te plakken. Het middenblok is 31.5 inch zonder zoom. 
Kruimel kijkt alsof hij denkt "Gaan we deze echt maken, Mammie? Hij is GROOT!"

It took me two days to get my background fabric prepared, basting all the lines for placement and the border zigzags and outlines of the borders.

Ik heb er twee dagen over gedaan om mijn achtergrondstof voor te bereiden, alle lijnen te rijgen voor plaatsing van het kompas en andere onderdelen, en de zigzagrand en de buitenlijnen van het blok.

My compass is basted in place and still needs to be appliqued. 

Mijn kompas zit vastgeregen en moet nog worden geappliqueerd.

I am planning to piece the tiny diamonds for the zizagborder. They are in two different colours.
The whole border will be appliqued in place. Hence the basting for correct placement.

Ik ben van plan de piepkleine wiebertjes voor de zigzagrand met de hand aan elkaar te zetten, en dan de hele rand te appliqueren. Vandaar dat ik alles heb geregen, zodat alles straks precies goed zit.

Whilst waiting for part 2 of Love Entwined to be published, I worked on my Mrs Beasley's Sampler Quilt by Leanne Beasley.
This is how I choose my fabrics. I pin all the pieces to a copy of the pattern sheet, to 'audition' my fabrics. 

Terwijl ik wachtte op deel 2 van Love Entwined, heb ik gewerkt aan mijn Mrs Beasley's Sampler Quilt van Leanne Beasley.
Dit is hoe ik mijn stoffen kies. Ik speld alle onderdelen op een kopie van het patroonblad, om mijn stoffen 'auditie' te laten doen. 

The scallops are appliqued. They still need the embroidered flowers added. 

De schulpen zijn geappliqueerd. Er moeten nog geborduurde bloemetjes op dat blok komen.

This is where I left off when Part 2 of Love Entwined suddenly appeared earlier than planned. Yay!
Mrs Beasley will have to wait until part 2 of LE is done. I am determined to keep up with this 18 month long project. Time will tell whether I will succeed.

Dit is waar ik was gebleven toen deel 2 van Love Entwined plotseling vroeger dan gepland zijn opwachting maakte. Joepie! 
Mrs Beasley zal even moeten wachten tot deel 2 van Love Entwined af is. Ik ben vastbesloten bij te blijven met dit 18 maanden durende project. Of ik het vol zal houden, zal de tijd leren.

The half Dresden Plate for Mrs Beasley's Sampler Quilt has been pieced and appliqued. It still needs the 'tree' adding.

De halve Dresden Plate voor Mrs Beasley's Sampler Quilt zit aan elkaar en is geappliqueerd. De 'boom' moet er nog worden opgezet. 

My stitching friends spoiled me over the past week. First a parcel from my friend Bunny from Canada arrived, containing the brand new patterns for Lovebird Lane, including the fabric pack with all the pictures, and the buttons. She had also included a very sweet purse which she had made herself. Thank you ever so much, Bunny! 

Mijn handwerkvriendinnen hebben me erg verwend de afgelopen week. Eerst kwam er een pakje van Bunny uit Canada, met daarin de gloednieuwe patronen voor Lovebird Lane, inclusief het stoffenpakketje met alle plaatjes, en de buttons. En er zat ook nog een schattig beursje bij dat ze zelf had gemaakt. Heel erg bedankt, Bunny!

Yesterday, another parcel arrived. This time from Australia, from my friend Glenda. She sent me this beautiful kimono, to either wear, or unpick it and use the fabric for one of my quilt projects. Thank you so much, Glenda! 

En gisteren kwam er nog een pakje. Deze keer uit Australië, van mijn vriendin Glenda. Ze stuurde me deze prachtige kimono, om te dragen of uit elkaar te halen om de stof te gebruiken voor mijn quiltprojecten. Dank je wel, Glenda!

Love Entwined Part 1 & Garden

Part 1 of Love Entwined by Esther Aliu is finished. Just as well, because part 2 will be released on Monday in Australia, probably late Sunday evening for our time zone. I cannot wait to continue this beautiful quilt.

Deel 1 van Love Entwined van Esther Aliu is klaar. Dat is maar goed ook, want deel 2 komt Maandag uit in Australië, dus waarschijnlijk al laat op zondagavond voor onze tijdzone. Ik kan niet wachten om verder te gaan met deze prachtige quilt.

The 32 little cirles are quite fiddly (8mm in diameter) but with careful preparation they are not too difficult to do. 

De 32 kleine rondjes zijn behoorlijk priegelig (8 mm doorsnee) maar met een goede voorbereiding zijn ze niet zo moeilijk te maken.

I used metal washers and basted the fabric around them, soaked them in spray starch and let them dry. When I took the washers out, the circles had perfect round shapes and were easy to applique. 

Ik gebruikte metalen sluitringen en reeg de stof eromheen, drenkte ze in spuitstijfsel en liet ze drogen. 
Toen ik de sluitringen eruithaalde, waren de rondjes mooi rond en makkelijk te appliqueren.

So much fun to see how many different kinds of violets there are in one container. 

Zo grappig om te zien hoe veel verschillende soorten bosviooltjes er in één bak zitten. 

This beautiful cosmea plant is very delicate, but is managing fine in the hot weather we've had for several days. I'm watering the garden every day now that everything is in flower.

Deze mooie cosmea is erg teer, maar hij doorstaat het warme weer dat we de afgelopen dagen hebben gehad. Ik geef de tuin iedere dag water nu alles bloeit.

Now I'm off to choose which project to work on until part 2 of Love Entwined is released. At the moment I'm trying to choose between part 2 of Chateau Hexagon by Lynette Anderson, or part 1 of Mrs Beasley's Sampler Quilt. I really have too much to choose from at the moment.

Nu ga ik gauw kiezen waar ik aan zal werken tot deel 2 van Love Entwined uitkomt. De keus gaat op dit moment tussen deel 2 van Chateau Hexagon van Lynette Anderson en deel 1 van Mrs Beasley's Sampler Quilt van Leanne's House. Ik heb echt te veel om uit te kiezen op dit moment.

WOW: Love Entwined & Garden

My mariner's compass for Love Entwined by Esther Aliu is pieced. The mistake was quite easy to correct. I pinned it to the background fabric I will be using.
Now I need to prepare the outer ring of the compass, which includes 32 tiny circles of only 8mm. 

Mijn kompas voor Love Entwined van Esther Aliu zit in elkaar. De fout was vrij gemakkelijk te herstellen. Ik heb hem gespeld op de achtergrond die ik wil gebruiken voor Love Entwined. 
Nu nog de buitenring van het kompas, met 32 kleine rondjes van 8mm. 

The blue aquilegia surprised me with two beautiful new flowers this morning. 

De blauwe akelei verraste me vanmorgen met twee prachtige nieuwe bloemen.

The hostas are starting to flower too. 

De hosta's krijgen ook al bloemen.

The pale pink daisy plant came up with another very pretty brighter pink one. 

De zachtroze margriet  heeft weer zo'n prachtige feller roze bloem.

Just because alchemilla is so beautiful after the rain. 

Gewoon, omdat vrouwenmantel zo prachtig is als het heeft geregend.

The hydrangeas are finally starting to flower!

De hortensia's beginnen ook eindelijk te bloeien!

Love Entwined Start

All these pieces should at some point become a Mariner's Compass. Having never made one, I opted to piece it by hand, using freezer paper templates. 

Al deze stukjes zouden een kompas moeten worden. Ik had er nog nooit een in elkaar gezet, dus koos ervoor hem met de hand in elkaar te zetten, met freezer paper malletjes.

After a few hours, this is what I had. 

Na een paar uurtjes had ik dit.

Then Kruimel came to lend a paw, well, sort of. 

Kruimel kwam een handje helpen. Nou ja, niet echt.

After a little while, he could't be bothered any more. He is so cute when he's asleep. 

Na een tijdje vond hij het niet meer zo interessant. Hij is zo schattig als hij slaapt.

The foxgloves in our garden are still so beautiful. Love this vanilla and pink one.

Het vingerhoedskruid in onze tuin staat er nog steeds mooi bij. Deze vanillekleurige met roze vind ik erg mooi. 

I just found out I made a mistake in my compass, and need to unpick one section, just when I was about to stitch the last seam to close the circle. Pfew! 

Ik heb net ontdekt dat er een fout zit in mijn kompas en nu moet ik één hoek uit elkaar halen, net toen ik bezig was met het laatste naadje de cirkel te sluiten. Pfoe!
