My Dear Jane & Water Colour Paintings of Harris & Skye

I arrived safely back home yesterday afternoon, after two lovely weeks in Scotland.
We spent a week on the Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides, in this lovely holiday cottage:

Ik ben gisteren veilig teruggekomen, na twee heerlijke weken in Schotland. 
We hebben een week doorgebracht op het eiland Harris, in de Buiten Hebriden, in dit leuke vakantiehuis:  

The other week we spent on Skye, where my friend lives.

De andere week brachten we op Skye door, waar mijn vriendin woont. 

Exciting news, I started my own Dear Jane project. Every self-respecting quilter appears to have done one ;o)) so now I'm starting mine. I have three little blocks finished:

Spannend nieuws! Ik ben begonnen aan mijn eigen Dear Jane. Iedere zichzelf respecterende quilter (;o)) lijkt er een te hebben gemaakt, dus nu begin ik aan de mijne. Ik heb drie kleine blokjes afgemaakt: 

The colours I chose are burgundy and dusky pinks, with different cream backgrounds. I'm not stitching them in any particular order. This is A7, part of the burgundy ones.

De kleuren die ik gekozen heb zijn bordeaux en zachtroze, met verschillende crème achtergrondjes. Ik maak ze niet op volgorde. Dit is A7, een van de bordeaux-blokjes.

A8 which will be next door to it, a burgundy and cream one.

B3, one on the second row, in dusky pink and cream.

I also painted (at last!) and got three watercolours done whilst I was away. They might still need a bit of tweaking with pastels, but I will have a think before I do that. It was almost a year since I had last painted:

En ik heb ook (eindelijk!) weer geschilderd, en drie aquarels gemaakt terwijl ik weg was. Er moet misschien nog wel iets aan gedaan worden met pastelkrijt, maar daar denk ik eerst nog even over na. Het was bijna een jaar geleden dat ik voor het laatst geschilderd had.

And I just had to share this picture with you, of a sunset on our favourite beach on the Isle of Harris: Luskentyre. Such mind-blowing beauty. I just admired and absorbed.

Ik moest gewoon deze foto met jullie delen, van een prachtige zonsondergang op ons lievelingsstrand op het eiland Harris: Luskentyre. Overweldigende schoonheid die ik alleen maar kon bewonderen en in mij opnemen.

I think I will wait for my next painting tuition to attempt to paint this in watercolour.

Ik denk dat ik maar wacht tot mijn volgende schilderles voor ik me hier aan waag.

Back in Harris, Outer Hebrides

It has been a month since I wrote a blog entry, so here goes.
No stitchy news this time, but I will be back soon with two new projects I'm working on.

Het is een maand geleden dat ik iets geschreven heb op mijn blog, dus hoogste tijd. 
Geen handwerknieuws deze keer, maar ik ben snel weer terug met twee nieuwe projecten waar ik aan werk.

I travelled to my beloved Scotland on the 17th of March, and last Saturday we took the Ferry to Tarbert on the Isle of Harris, in the Outer Hebrides.

Op 17 maart ben ik naar mijn geliefde Schotland gereisd. Eerst naar Skye en afgelopen zaterdag hebben we de veerboot van Uig op Skye naar Tarbert in de Buiten Hebriden genomen.

We are staying in our favourite cottage Laxdale again.

I haven't done any painting yet, but did manage a bit of stitching. I will show you pictures next time I find a WiFi signal somewhere.
The weather is so lovely, that we are not spending much time indoors to do stitching or painting.
 
Ik heb nog niet geschilderd, maar heb wel wat gehandwerkt. Dat laat ik de volgende keer zien als ik ergens WiFi tegenkom. 
Het weer is zo mooi dat we nauwelijks tijd binnen doorbrengen om te handwerken en schilderen.

WOW: Château Hexagon Progress

Since my last blog post, I made some progress on my Château Hexagon project. This is what I have got so far.

Sinds mijn laatste blogje, ben ik flink opgeschoten met mijn Château Hexagon-project. Dit is wat ik tot nu toe heb. 
 
At the moment I'm adding 16 little windows to the castle, including some surface stitchery. Five down, eleven to go!

Ik ben bezig met 16 kleine raampjes op het kasteel te zetten, en daar nog wat op te borduren. Vijf zijn er klaar, ik moet er nog elf! 

The finishing suggested by Lynette Anderson, designer of this pretty project, is a scrappy border using all the fabrics in this project, and four corner blocks with hexagon flowers. 

Lynette Anderson, ontwerpster van dit leuke project, stelt een scrappy rand voor met alle in het project gebruikte stofjes, en op de vier hoeken een blokje met een hexagonbloem.

Here are a few detail images of the applique and stitcheries. The little applique goose is only 2 inches across. 

Hier zijn wat detailfoto's van de applicaties en stitcheries. Het kleine gansje is maar 5 cm lang. 

I don't often show you pictures of our third cat Elvis. That's because he is frightened of the camera (and lots of other things). We adopted him from a cat shelter in September 2005, when he was just 12 weeks old. He was found in a street at only 6 weeks old. You can imagine why he came with some 'baggage'.

Ik laat jullie niet zo vaak foto's zien van onze derde kat Elvis. Dat komt omdat hij bang is voor de camera (en voor nog veel meer dingen). We hebben hem in september 2005 geadopteerd uit een asiel, toen hij pas 12 weken oud was. Hij was op straat gevonden toen hij nog maar zes weken oud was. Niet vreemd dat hij een rugzakje heeft.

Whilst Kruimel and I watched the figure skating at the Winter Olympics, I traced the zillions of tiny pieces for the first border for LE. Not that I have completed my centre with the four vases, but I just like to do something useful when I'm watching someting on the tv or laptop.
And Love Entwined has started calling my name again (but so has Phebe and Mountmellick...).

Terwijl Kruimel en ik keken naar het kunstrijden bij de Olympische Spelen, heb ik een enorm aantal kleine stukjes voorbereid voor de eerste rand voor Love Entwined. Niet dat ik mijn middenstuk met de vier vazen af heb, maar ik vind het fijn om iets nuttigs te doen als ik naar iets op de tv of op mijn laptop kijk. En Love Entwined begint weer te kriebelen (maar Phebe en Mountmellick doen dat ook...). 

My Dad started his five weeks' radiation therapy on Monday and is doing as well as he could be, given the circumstances.

Mijn vader is afgelopen maandag begonnen met vijf weken bestralingen en het gaat naar omstandigheden goed met hem. 

I am off to link my blog to Esther Aliu's WOW (WIPs on Wednesdays). She has started her own LE and it is very exciting to follow. 

Nu ga ik mijn blog linken aan dat van Esther Aliu voor haar WOW (WIPs op Woensdag). Ze is begonnen aan haar eigen Love Entwined and het is heel spannend om te volgen.

Betty Prins Trunk Show

It is not often that I write two blog posts on the same day. I had a lovely afternoon at Rijpwetering at the Hertogshoeve, a gorgeous farm building in a lovely location, where Betty Prins's Trunk Show was held today.

Het komt niet vaak voor dat ik twee keer op dezelfde dag een blogje schrijf. Ik had een heerlijke middag in Rijpwetering, bij de Hertogshoeve, een prachtige borderij op een prachtig plekje, waar Betty Prins haar trunkshow hield.

I would have happily packed this sideboard with gorgeous china in the boot of my Twingo, which alas is too small ;o)

Ik had graag deze buffetkast mét het prachtige servies ingeladen in de achterbak van mijn Twingo, die helaas te klein is ;o) 

Betty had everything at the ready for the start of her trunk show. Her beautiful hexagon quilt was real eye candy, with lots of little bits of pretty fabric.

Betty had alles klaarstaan voor het begin van haar trunkshow. Haar prachtige hexagonquilt was echt een genot voor het oog, met allemaal mooie kleine stukjes stof. 

What a great idea to combine cross stitched hearts with patchwork and applique. Certainly something to bear in mind for a future project. Betty has imcorporated all the names of her family members in all the hearts. It has become a real family heirloom.

Wat een geweldig idee om borduurwerk te combineren met patchwork en applique. Echt iets om te onthouden voor een toekomstig project. Betty heeft alle namen van haar familieleden verwerkt in de hartjes. Het is een echt familie-erfstuk geworden.

When I met Betty at Samsara Qulting in Lisse ten days ago, she promised me she would bring along the centre of her Phebe. Here it is:

Toen ik Betty een dag of tien geleden bij Samsara Quilting in Lisse ontmoette, beloofde ze me dat ze haar Phebe-middenstuk mee zou nemen naar Rijpwetering. En hier is hij dan:

WOW: Mountmellick & Château Hexagon

Those are my two focus projects at the moment: Château Hexagon and Mountmellick, Di Ford's mystery which is published in Quiltmania.

This is my progress so far. I forgot to include the border in this picture (see previous post). The basket is also made up of the border fabric.

Dat zijn de twee projecten waar ik op het moment aan werk: Château Hexagon en Mountmellick, de mystery van Di Ford, uit Quiltmania. 

Dit is mijn voortgang tot nu toe. Ik vergat de randen op de foto te laten zien (zie eerder bericht). The basket is also made up of the border fabric.

I started the broderie perse for the roses last night. So much fun to do. But also fiddly and very time-consuming. 

Ik ben gisteravond begonnen met de broderie perse rozen. Zo leuk om te doen, maar ook priegelig en het vreet tijd.

 My furry helper is always there to lend a paw...
"Mummy can I play too?"

Mijn harige helper is er altijd om een pootje te helpen...
"Mammie, mag ik ook meedoen?"

...but thankfully he also has a snooze now and then so I can work a bit faster.

...maar gelukkig doet hij ook af en toe een dutje zodat ik een beetje kan opschieten. 

 

I also completed part 6 of Château Hexagon by Lynette Anderson. I'm not stitching them in any particular order, but still need to complete part 3, part 7 and part 9. The latter arrived last week and it also incudes Lynette's version of the border, which I love. So that's what I will be doing too: a scrappy border. I will show you a picture in a few days' time. I don't want to spoil the surprise for those who haven't received their kit yet.

Deel 6 van Château Hexagon van Lynette Anderson is ook af. Ik maak ze niet op volgorde, maar moet nog de delen 3, 7 en 9 maken. Die laatste kwam van de week aan en Lynette's rand staat er ook in, die ik heel leuk vind. De mijne wordt op dezelfde manier gemaakt, met scrappy rand. Ik laat over een paar dagen een foto van Lynette's hele quilt zien. Ik wil de verrassing niet bederven voor diegenen die hun pakketje nog niet hebben ontvangen.

The helleborus is in full flower at the moment. These two look a bit battered by the rain, but they are so beautiful. I also have toadstools and spring bulbs in the garden. Mother Nature is a bit puzzled as to what she is supposed to be doing.

De helleborus staat te bloeien. Deze twee zien er een beetje verregend uit, maar ze zijn zo mooi. Ik heb ook paddenstoelen en voorjaarsbollen in de tuin. Moeder Natuur is een beetje in de war.

Sharing the Daylight Lamp

Early this morning, whilst I was stitching block 6 of Château Hexagon, we shared the daylight lamp :o)

Vanmorgen vroeg, terwijl ik werkte aan blok 6 van Château Hexagon, deelden wij de daglichtlamp :o)

WOW: my Dad, Mountmellick and Château Hexagon

Thank you so much for your kind messages about my Dad.

He received relatively good news on Friday. The cancer has not spread to other parts of his body, but he will need radiation therapy and anti-hormone therapy. This should hopefully keep the nasty cells in check and give him some more good years.

Heel erg bedankt voor jullie lieve berichtjes over Pap. 

Hij heeft vrijdag vrij goed nieuws gehad. De kanker is niet uitgezaaid naar de rest van zijn lichaam, maar hij moet wel bestraald worden en anti-hormoon medicijnen nemen. Dit zal hopelijk de slechte cellen in toom houden en hem nog veel goede jaren geven. 


When Quiltmania Magazine announced a Mystery by Di Ford, I just had to join in. Since seeing her projects in Veldhoven last May, I am even more in love with her work.

After hearing Dad's relatively good news, I started part 1 of "Mountmellick". This is a picture taken a few days ago, with part of the layout complete.

Toen het tijdschrift Quiltmania aankondigde een mystery van Di Ford te gaan doen, moest ik wel meedoen. Sinds ik vorig jaar mei haar quilts in Veldhoven heb gezien, ben ik nog meer verliefd op haar werk. 

Na het horen van Paps relatief goede nieuws, ben ik begonnen met deel 1 van "Mountmellick".   Deze foto is van een paar dagen geleden. 

Although I do have most of the fabrics chosen by Di in my stash, I chose to do my own thing, with a different border, and broderie perse flowers.
I'm still hunting for the perfect fabric for the other four swags and some bits and pieces for the basket/vase.

Ook al heb ik het grootste gedeelte van de stoffen die Di koos in mijn stash, heb ik er voor gekozen mijn eigen stoffen te kiezen, met een andere rand en broderie perse bloemen. 
Ik zoek nog de perfecte stof voor de andere vier guirlandes, en een paar onderdelen van de mand/vaas. 


And in the mean time I'm also still working on Château Hexagon by Lynette Anderson. This is part 6 in progress (I'm not stitching the parts in any particular order). The last part will be released this week, the top border with a hill and a castle.

En ondertussen werk ik ook nog steeds aan Château Hexagon van Lynette Anderson. Dit is mijn vordering op deel 6 (ik maak ze niet in een bepaalde volgorde). Het laatste deel komt deze week uit, de strook aan de bovenkant met een heuvel en een kasteel. 

Our two British Shorthair cats don't often sleep together, but a few days back, Kruimel (Dutch for 'crumb') and Luna were dozing on the settee near eachother.
Can you tell how tiny our little Luna really is. She is about half Kruimel's size.

Onze twee Britse Korthaar katten slapen niet vaak samen, maar een paar dagen geleden lagen Kruimel en Luna samen te soezen op de bank. 
Zie je hoe klein onze Luna is. Ze is ongeveer half zo groot als Kruimel.
